I so much enjoyed listening to you and Sam, Kathleen. As I've found before, you ask great questions. A rich conversation.

In 1993-94, Sam and I worked together at a short-lived magazine in Mexico City called Mexico Insight, before Sam went fully freelance and I joined Variety. I was a little in awe of him, as he submerged himself into Mexican culture with uncommon ease. The skills that would make him a great transnational journalist were already apparent: linguistic ability, great capacity for empathy, and a love of Mexican culture. He was the only expat I knew who listened to Los Tigres del Norte.

I wondered if you two might have crossed paths, Andrew! Thanks so much for your kind words, I'm very glad you enjoyed the conversation.

Thank you for the information. I am curious how you feel about Americans being the folks that transport these drugs through the border? What is your thoughts about military grade weapons being sold to the cartels that are manufactured in the US?

Thank you for listening and for your comments. You're right that of course there are many U.S. citizens involved in trafficking and selling these drugs coming in from Mexico. And as we discuss in the interview, there needs to be a lot more effort on the U.S. side to stem the tide of weapons flowing south. Some data from the ATF last year was at least somewhat promising, with more guns seized at the southern border than in 2024.

Kathleen, what an incredible interview w/ Sam Quinones. Thank you and Sam so much. Very enlightening, and scary, the addiction transformation w/ synthetics.

Thank you Jeanine! I ended the conversation feeling there was still so much to explore on these topics - some of the most important (and difficult) of our time I think.

It was very informative and a topic hardly spoken of at all. Having this conversation w/ Sam was excellent as he is so informed, armed with the statistics that tell the whole story. Kudos to you both.
