"We are dying in disorder"

A conversation with end-of-life doula Wilka Roig about death, dying and ritual in Mexico

Welcome to The Mexpatriate.

Today I’m publishing the inaugural episode of The Mexpat Interview video podcast. And I’m starting at the end…of life.

Last week, thousands of tourists flocked to cities around Mexico for Day of the Dead; to admire altars and cemeteries, to dress up and to imbibe a beautiful sensory experience (if not always a spiritual one). How does today’s cosmopolitan version of this holiday relate to ancient traditions? Do Mexicans really have a special relationship with the universal experience of death?

My guest in this interview is Wilka Roig, an end-of-life doula originally from Puerto Rico who is based in Mexico. We discuss the ancient history of accompaniment of the dying and our modern disconnection from death, the roots of Day of the Dead, the first “green” burial site in Latin America, access to palliative care and much more.
